Modern Foreign Languages
Subject Description

Students must study French from year 7 to year 9. They can then opt to study French for their GCSEs. Lessons are topic based and students use the 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in lessons. In both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 we use many different assessment methods and students are encouraged to assess their own work and the work of others. We use target setting so the students know what level they are working at and what they need to do to reach the next level.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9)

In Key Stage 3 students are taught different topic areas which include: - myself and my family, jobs, places in a town, health and fitness, food and drink. Students are assessed at the end of each unit in the textbook. We monitor student progress and set targets so students know what they need to do to reach the next level. Students do assessments in all 4 of the skills. Students are also asked to set targets for themselves and to assess their own progress.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

In Key Stage 4 students study for the GCSE exams over the two year period. They must write 3 pieces of coursework in French with guidance from their teacher. The other skills of listening, speaking and writing are examined at the end of year 11. The Modern Foreign Languages department produces excellent results with 81% of the students gaining A* to C. Classes in Key Stage 4 tend to be smaller so students receive more individual attention.

Extra Curricular

The French café is run at lunchtimes for Key Stage 4 students to practise their French. Other languages such as Italian, Japanese and Spanish have been offered to students at lunchtimes as part of the Children’s University project and in after school clubs. The Modern Foreign Languages department also organise regular trips to France including residential trips to Normandy and trips to the Christmas markets in Lille to experience French culture.
